Yes I know the title of my blog is “Makeup By Alex,” but creating the perfect hair regime is just as important as any cosmetic endeavor. I love big hair… big, wavy, natural, looking hair. My hair is naturally wavy and I try and do anything I can do make sure it has plenty of volume and minimal frizz. Today I am going to talk about how I achieve the beach-hair look. Granted, not everyone can get natural beach waves because of their hair texture. I mean some people have stick straight hair that doesn’t hold a curl… but I hope my tips can help you in some way shape or form. The first step I take after I towel dry my hair is to apply sea salt spray. I use Not Your Mothers Beach Babe Texturing Sea Salt Spray. You can get it at any drug store, it gets the job done, and it smells great. I have also read about using sugar spray for beach waves. I haven’t tried it personally, but the word on the street is that it gives you natural waves, and doesn’t dry out your hair or leave it crunchy (like some sea salt sprays). If you have straight hair, try Bumble and Bumble Texture Hair (Un) Dressing Creme. Use small amounts of this at a time… using too much at once will make your hair a little crunchy. This product will hold curls pretty well… I think it creates a messy/bedhead look. I have to crunch my hair no matter what product I use until I see waves form and staying put.
Hair oil is a must for shiny, frizz free hair. I have learned to love coconut oil… I use a pea size amount (a little goes a long way…trust me) and scrunch my hair like I did with the sea salt spray. You can get it at basically any super market for a decent price. I use Nutiva brand Coconut Oil. For me, nothing is better than the smell of coconut and having silky smooth hair… so you could say that I’m hooked on this product. When my hair has dried, I apply dry shampoo… and lots of it. I swear by this stuff. Not only will it de-grease your hair, but it will also add a ton of volume. I typically spray at the front roots of my hair around my face, as well as down the center of my part. I have to use my fingers to massage my head so the shampoo sets in to bring life back to my hair. It is VERY important that you make sure the dry shampoo is completely mixed in with your hair… usually it shows up gray, and having gray spots on your roots may not be the best look. I use Batiste Hint of Color Batiste Dry Shampoo. You can either get it in blonde, medium brunette, or dark brunette, so it will blend sooo much better when compared to the typical dry shampoo. Seriously that stuff is great… I apply it throughout the day as needed. So did I mention that Birchbox has great hair products too? Since we are talking about volume, the Dear Clark Volumizing Tonic works wonders (When does Birchbox not save the day… lets be real). As I said, no one’s hair type is exactly alike so finding your own beach-wave hair regime could take some experimenting of your own. I do hope that I was able to offer some insight on how to acquire this look.
Until next time...
